History of Ayetoro Gbede

Ayetoro Gbede is one of the youngest and perhaps the fastest-growing town in Okunland, Kogi West Senatorial District, Kogi State, Nigeria. Okunland has upwards of 200 communities and a population of about One Million.

Founded in 1927 by early Christian converts from 14 Gbede communities, converts who survived the devastation wrought by Nupe raids and were threatened by traditional religious practitioners; Ayetoro Gbede, the largest community in Ijumu local government, is 21km from Kabba along Ilorin-Kabba federal highway.

The town’s population is over 20,000 and is led by a First-Class monarch.

Development in the community has been mostly through self-help; farming, particularly cashew seed, has been the mainstay of the local economy.

The town was established over ninety-one years ago. The inhabitants of the town speak their local dialects of Okun and Gbede, which is a Yoruba dialect. The current traditional ruler is Oba Sunday Ehindero.

The first house in Ayetoro Gbede was built beside the old market and was owned by the founder, Oba Ajileye Daniel Alaa Bello. Ayetoro is also blessed with cashew seed, cocoa, vegetables, palm wine, and farming influence. The first community high school in Ayetoro Gbede was established in September 1979.
