History of Ayetoro Gbede
Ayetoro Gbede is one of the youngest and perhaps the fastest-growing town in Okunland, Kogi West Senatorial District, Kogi State, Nigeria. Okunland has upwards of 200 communities and a population of about One Million.
Founded in 1927 by early Christian converts from 14 Gbede communities, converts who survived the devastation wrought by Nupe raids and were threatened by traditional religious practitioners; Ayetoro Gbede, the largest community in Ijumu local government, is 21km from Kabba along Ilorin-Kabba federal highway.
The town’s population is over 20,000 and is led by a First-Class monarch.
Development in the community has been mostly through self-help; farming, particularly cashew seed, has been the mainstay of the local economy.
The town was established over ninety-one years ago. The inhabitants of the town speak their local dialects of Okun and Gbede, which is a Yoruba dialect. Oba David Sunday Ehindero was appointed as the 4th Olu of Ayetoro-Gbede on June 1, 2017. He reigned until his passing on June 18, 2023.
Following the vacuum created by the demise of Oba Ehindero, and during the process of selecting a successor, the Ayetoro-Gbede Traditional Council initially nominated High Chief Joel Kolade Saiye as Chairman of the Traditional Council. However, his death during the interregnum necessitated a leadership transition.
Subsequently, High Chief S. I. Bello was appointed as Chairman of the Traditional Council and served as the Acting Olu of Ayetoro-Gbede. He maintained leadership during this transitional period until the emergence of a new monarch.
Oba Sunday Adewumi Ologe was later appointed and officially coronated as the 5th Olu of Ayetoro-Gbede on October 11, 2025.
The first house in Ayetoro Gbede was built beside the old market and was owned by the founder, Oba Ajileye Daniel Alaa Bello. Ayetoro is also blessed with cashew seed, cocoa, vegetables, palm wine, and farming influence. The first community high school in Ayetoro Gbede was established in September 1979.
